Let’s begin with the basics: a menstrual cycle is your body’s way of physically preparing for the possibility of a pregnancy. The length of a cycle can last anywhere in between 21 and 35 days. Menstrual cycles fall into four distinct phases including: follicular phase, ovulation, the luteal phase, and menstruation.

Menstrual Cycle Phases

The Follicular Phase is when your ovaries prepare to release an egg, and the uterus in return prepares for its arrival. This phase can last anywhere from one to three weeks and throughout you may find your energy levels and motivation rising as estrogen increases in your system.

Ovulation is when the egg that was prepared in the last stage is released. This means your body is fertile and ready for a pregnancy. The egg is viable for between 12 and 24 hours and during this window, hormone and energy levels are high.

The Luteal Phase happens only if the egg is not fertilized. Instead of a pregnancy, the body prepares to shed the lining in the uterus, which lasts 10-14 days. Your hormone levels decrease, and you could find yourself wanting to slow down and relax.

Menstruation, aka your period, lasts between 3 and 7 days. This is when the uterine lining is shed. Here your hormones are at their lowest and your body may crave more rest.
